• Ogun State Loses to Uncontrolled Logging In lagoon creeks - By Dr. S. Kehinde sanwo, ph.d. (wales) Chief executive Sanwo timbers ltd. Chief Olusegun Osoba, the Executive Governor of Ogun State, may not be aware that his State loses to the Lagos State Government, millions of naira in forest revenue due to the massive forest destruction currently going on in the riverine lagoon areas of his State. Both Ogun and Lagos States share a common boundary along the riverine lagoon between the Ijebu-East Local Government in Ogun State and Epe Local Government in Lagos State. It is a pity that the only forest revenue post in the lagoon areas of both States is located in Epe in Lagos State. It is therefore clear that logs extracted in Ogun State report at and are paid for at Epe in Lagos State. This is a case of "monkey works baboon eats".

However, at the start of this Millennium the harvesting of forests for wood was controversial. There was controversy over the practice of creating forests and intensively managing them for wood production. The controversy even extended to the practice of planting tree species that were not originally indigenous to the region. In contrast, agriculture had always accepted the practice of using the most desirable, the most convenient, the most productive and the most manageable species (no matter where the species originally came from).

• The potential role of forest plantations in meeting future demands for industrial wood products - - Adrian Whiteman and Christopher Brown Food and Agriculture Organisation, via Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, ITALY. This paper presents a forecast of the supply and demand for wood and wood products to the year 2010 and three forecasts of future potential industrial roundwood supply from forest plantations to the year 2050. The forecasts predict that overall wood supply and demand is expected to increase by about 25% from 1996 levels to just under 1.9 billion m3 in 2010.

SILC’s mission is based on sound and compelling research and widespread support from key stakeholders across Australia and overseas.
